Packers finalize 53-man roster ahead of season opener

Key roster battles, including kicker competition, settled

The Green Bay Packers have finalized their 53-man roster ahead of their 2024 season opener in Brazil. The team made several key decisions, including settling the kicker competition.

Kicker competition

Anders Carlson and Greg Joseph competed for the kicker position throughout the preseason. Carlson appeared to have the edge, but Joseph impressed in the final preseason game.

Ultimately, the Packers decided to release Carlson and keep Joseph as their kicker.

Backup quarterbacks

The Packers also made a decision on their backup quarterbacks. Jordan Love will remain the primary backup to Aaron Rodgers, while Danny Etling was released.

Love had a solid preseason, completing 65% of his passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns.

Offensive line shuffling

The Packers made several changes to their offensive line, including moving Yosh Nijman to left tackle and Elgton Jenkins to right tackle.

Nijman played well at left tackle in the preseason, while Jenkins has experience at both guard and tackle.

Other roster moves

The Packers also made several other roster moves, including:

  • Releasing cornerback Keisean Nixon
  • Signing wide receiver Juwann Winfree
  • Placing linebacker Rashan Gary on injured reserve

The Packers will open the 2024 season on September 10th against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Brazil.
