A Framework To Support Nursing Care

RCN Publishes Competency Framework for Care of People with Liver Disease

A Framework to Support Nursing Care

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has published a competency framework to support the nursing care of patients with liver disease. The framework describes the professional standards expected of practitioners when caring for people with liver disease and recognizes the importance of liver nurses and liver recipient transplant co-ordinators in clinical practice.

Causes and Diagnosis

The framework outlines the three main causes of liver disease: viral hepatitis, alcohol-related liver disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. It also discusses the diagnosis of these conditions in patients with chronic liver disease, including the use of blood tests, imaging, and biopsy.

Complications and Management

The framework emphasizes the potential complications of liver disease, such as cirrhosis, portal hypertension, and hepatic encephalopathy. It provides guidance on managing these complications and improving patient outcomes through lifestyle modifications, medication, and surgical interventions.

Supporting Patients

The RCN competency framework also highlights the importance of providing emotional support to patients with liver disease and their families. Nurses are expected to be compassionate, understanding, and able to provide information and education to patients and their loved ones.

By following the standards outlined in this framework, nurses can ensure that patients with liver disease receive high-quality care that meets their individual needs and improves their quality of life.
