New Leader of North Korea

Kim Jong-Un Takes Power

By Associated Press

SEOUL, South Korea – Kim Jong-Un, the son and heir apparent of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il, has been named the country's new supreme leader, the official Korean Central News Agency reported Tuesday.

The announcement came as a surprise to many observers, who had expected Kim Jong-Il to name his younger son, Kim Jong-chul, as his successor. Kim Jong-Un is believed to be in his late 20s and has little known experience in government or the military.

Analysts say Kim Jong-Un's appointment is likely to ensure a smooth transition of power in North Korea, which has been ruled by the Kim family for more than 60 years. However, they also warn that Kim Jong-Un may face challenges from within the military and the ruling Workers' Party.
